Jacob Heinrich Helbigk became a citizen of Hamburg in 1737 and became a master painter in Hamburg in the same year. He specialized largely in trompe-l`oels painting and a few portraits. In the present painting, Helbigk follows a long tradition of the Dutch school of the 17th century. He looks for his models and motifs from Edward Colliers, Samuel van Hoogstraten and Cornelis Gysbrecht.
